Volcanoes are basically Earth’s pressure cookers

Deep inside the planet, rocks melt into magma: hot, thick, and full of gas. When that pressure builds up, it has two choices:
☑️ Flow gently, like the Indian Deccan traps did or Hawaii’s lava rivers
☑️ Explode violently, like Mount St. Helens

The difference? It’s all in the magma recipe: How thick (viscous) or runny it is.

Between Leh and Phyang in ladakh, along the highway, you’ll see these black lines across the mountain face. They say a demon once terrorised the valley until a saint struck him down. His blood spilled as they fled across the mountain, leaving a black streak.
Ask a geologist, and they’ll tell you: That black streak is a dike magma that forced its way through the crust and solidified into stone.

One story speaks of saints and demons. The other speaks of tectonic drama.
Both are ways of looking at the natural world around us!

The Shyok River is breathtaking. It cuts through some of the most dramatic, high-altitude terrain in Ladakh. But its name holds a warning. Shyok means “river of death” in Ladakhi. Not because of myth, but because of reality.

Unpredictable currents, sudden floods, and steep, unstable banks have made this river both lifeline and threat for centuries. It shifts without warning, carving and destroying in the same breath. To witness it is to understand how beauty and danger can flow through the same channel.

Deep below the crust, born from the Earth’s mantle, is a rock called peridotite dense, dark green. It’s rare to see them on the surface. In places like Ladakh, tectonic collisions have pushed this deep-mantle rock all the way to the surface.

I remember my first trip back to home, after having finished my first year of studying earth science. I saw my home city in a very different light. I could point at the rocks on the pavement or the buildings around me and say “hey! That used to be the belly of a volcano!” or point at a beautiful scenery and say “Hey, two whole continents had to collide to make this happen”. It opened up a whole new perspective. I saw Earth with a sense of awe and respect.

The Neev Project is about connecting people to the planet’s deep-time story and building a future that respects its past.

In the middle of Mumbai’s urban skyline stands Gilbert Hill; a rare rock tower(monolith) of columnar basalt. Its another reminder of Mumbai’s volcanic past. While the columnar basalt formation (the iconic hexagonal columns) are relatively common in volcanic regions, a towering columnar rock structure like Gilbert Hill is incredibly rare.

Formed around 60 million years ago, this massive rock face is one of only three such massive structures in the world. A monument built by time and slow cooling lava. It’s right here in Andheri! 😍

Did you know Mumbai’s favourite caves have an explosive past?

The rocks at Kanheri are the result of violent underwater volcanic eruptions that occurred around 61 million years ago. Ash, lava, and rock fragments surged across the landscape like a massive mudslide, eventually solidifying into volcaniclastic rock.
Fast forward to 2,000 years ago, Buddhist monks transformed these ancient volcanic rocks into their canvas, carving out 109 remarkable caves. 90,000 years ago, a drive up Khardung-La, Ladakh, one of the world’s highest motorable passes - would reveal the Leh glacier stretching nearly 6 km beyond its current edge. The entire village of Gangles lay buried beneath its icy expanse. Today, the Leh glacier is still visible at the top of Khardung-La.
While much of the glacier’s retreat is due to Earth’s natural climate cycles, the past 30 years have seen a dramatic retreating of glaciers in this region because of global warming.
